Under the leadership of Governor David “Jayjay” C. Suarez, the Provincial Government of Quezon devised IMPACT - Innovations and Multisectoral Partnerships to Achieve Control of TB, which aims to purge tuberculosis (TB) in the province.
According to Dr. Jocelyn Cabarles and Dr. Karen Dalawang bayan, IMPACT is a new TB Control Project, following Linking Initiatives and Networking to Control TB (TB LINC), which will be supported by USAID for 5 years starting on October 2012 until September 2017.
The project’s long term goal is to strengthen the local programs addressing the control and eradication of TB in the Philippines. According to studies, the Philippines places 6th in the list of countries with the highest incidences of TB – with the disease being one of the major causes of mortality in the country.
Gov. Suarez promised that the Provincial Government will give its full support to the program and will gladly provide assistance through the Provincial Health Office underDr. Agripino Tullas, as well as the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) Medical Coordinators under Dr. Erlinda Plotria of the Provincial Chest Clinic.
According to Dr. Plotria, a situational analysis on Pebrero 25 – 28, 2013 and overall TB assessment of the province will determine what kind of intervention and prioritization will be given to a particular area.
IMPACT is managed by the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), a non-government organization which provides technical assistance to the National TB Control Program. (Quezon PIO)
