A two storey building that will serve as an extension of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Catanauan, Quezon was inaugurated last October 18. The said building houses six classrooms and can accommodate 400 college students in the said municipality.
The construction of the two-floor building at Brgy. Madulao amounted to around Php 10 million, which was taken from the fund of the Provincial Government. According to Quezon Governor David “Jayjay” C. Suarez, he will allocate 8 million more for the following year in order to improve the facilities available to the students. Senator Francisco“Chiz”also gave his word to donate Php 2 million to the said state university.
The lot on which the college is built on is donated by the good hearts of Mr. Antonio Macaraig and Mrs.Angelina Balesteros Rosales. Mr. Macaraig lot measures 15,000 square meters, while that of Mrs. Balesteros measures 1,068 square meters. As a sign of recognition for their generosity, the Provincial Government of Quezon awarded the two with plaques of appreciation. According to Mr. Macaraig, he donated the lot with the intention to help the youth in their area achieve a higher level of education without having to stay so far away from their homes and families.
SLSU President Dr. Cecilia Gascon advised the students to study well. She added that the residents of Catanauan are lucky because now that there is a reputable state university in their municipality, college education would be more convenient for the youth and their parents. Dr. Gascon challenged the students to finish their education and make the most of the things that they will learn. She also praised the officials of the town because their local government unit is the one paying the salaries of teachers and other staff working to run the school, and said that Director Dr. Wilfredo Faller is the only one whose pay check comes from SLSU and not from the municipality.
Catanauan Mayor Ramon Orfanel thanked Governor Suarez deeply for the projects the hardworking governor has given his town. He said that Catanauan did not receive any projects for the past three years, but the current administration of the Provincial Government is working to change that fate which has also been experienced by other distant towns and barangays.
According to Gov. Suarez, the success of projects and other services given by the Provincial Government would not be possible without the cooperation and support of the LGU officials in Quezon and the Quezonians themselves. He set 2019 as the target year to complete SLSU-Catanauan to further improve the quality of education in the said university.
Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce Representative Dr. Roberto Licup also attended the event and donated Php 50,000.00 for the students.
2nd District Senior Board Member Romano Talaga and 3rd District Board Member Victor Reyes were also present at the inauguration and gave their full support for the programs and projects of Gov. Suarez and the Provincial Government. According to the two board members, Serbisyong Suarez still has more to offer the people of Quezon.
